Here is how Mr. Sheally describes himself:

I have been a photojournalist all of my working life, having worked for the Hopewell News in high school for a diversified occupations class where you went to school for half a day and worked for the newspaper the other half. Then I spent four years in the United States Navy as a photographer in many countries. After that adventure, I worked as a wedding photographer for J. Etheridge Ward and as a commercial photographer for Frank Dimenti Studios, both in Richmond, then returned to my love of newspaper photojournalism for The Progress-Index in Petersburg for five years before moving to Virginia Beach, where I worked for The Virginian-Pilot for 37 years as a staff photographer. I have done three books on the Morgan Motorcars they being , MORGANS IN THE COLONIES, MORGANS: A BRITISH AFFAIR and THE RARE ONES: PETER MORGAN AND THE PLUS FOUR PLUS. These English sports cars are a hobby and I enjoy racing and restoring them .

In the last three years free lance journalism work is what I enjoy. Several more books and and works have been produced with a writer partner , Phyllis Speidell. Magazine features and commercial photojournalism are also part of the diet. other projects THE MILL ( about the Franklin paper mill that closed after 125 year of operation)has been published. Co work has been done on THE RIVER BINDS US, (about the vanishing Watermen of Crittenden/ Eclipse ) and in the works are a book on the Chuckatuck Community and one on the Nansemond Indians titled THE QUITE PEOPLE .

Westminster’s vision for the photo walk began with a desire to help the people of our community get to know each other and get to know our town, discovering beauty in places we may never have thought to look before.

Part of the Reformed tradition of Christianity is a valuing of all the parts of God’s world, including not just humanity, but the culture that humanity creates as well, including the arts. Westminster Church would love to see the Suffolk Photo Walk be a place where the world and the art of culture can be discovered and created.

Read the whole thing here.

The next time you’re out with your camera, try the following:

First, take the shot you would normally take. Then, force yourself to take it from a drastically different perspective. This could be lying on the ground, climbing a nearby hill, or circling the subject for another alternative view.

Don’t be afraid to set up shop (tripod, camera, other gear) in busy places with lots of people watching you, wondering what you’re doing. Obviously, make sure you’re not breaking any rules or laws related to the location. But definitely don’t let odd looks from passers-by cause you to skip the shot. Just do it. When you get home and pull up the image on the computer, you’ll be happy you did.

Don’t quickly bounce from tourist-attraction to tourist-attraction while in a new location, as you’ll undoubtedly miss valuable shots in between. Pay attention to the doorways, the fence posts, the people, and everything in between. You might later realize your best photo of Paris isn’t of the Eiffel Tower, but is instead of the elderly man sipping espresso who you noticed on the way back to the hotel.

Be willing to act as your own subject, should the right situation arise. If you come across a picturesque situation which would be enhanced with a person in-frame, don’t hesitate to set up the tripod and become the actor in your own production. I assure you, you’ll find that you’re easier to direct than most potential subjects.

Finally, have fun. When you put down your guard and concentrate on having fun, instead of on acting normally in public, your shots will be impacted by that shift in thinking. Normal is boring. Unusual, is interesting.
